Hello everyone. I'm looking at beginning a scratch project and trying to decide on a direction. This would matter if you were going to use the airplane for commercial operations, flight instruction, or other purpose other than education and recreation, etc. Cubs have options for slats and slotted flaps. If you're not going extreme then the patrol should be a better plane.

The higher airspeed at cruise would be enough for me to choose the Patrol. I never could understand why some Alaska cub drivers are so proud of their aircraft.

They are cool, but who wants to take a road trip in car that is stuck in first gear? Thanks for the responses. I'm not all that concerned about cruise speed. If I want to go somewhere, I have access to a Cessna and others. This bird will be just for personal use in getting in and out of unimproved areas where the ground is soft and low speed is key.

The emergence of New Piper divorced the company entirely from anything to do with new Cubs. Simply put, the Piper Super Cub holds its value extremely well.

There are not any inexpensive Super Cubs. Some of these are equipped with color mapcoms and GPS. For comparison, consider the Aviat Husky, an airplane designed to compete directly with the PA, but equipped with 30 more horsepower.

It has been suggested by some that if the PA18 were designed again today, it would look a lot like the Bearhawk Patrol. We know that the PA18 has a loyal following, but let us highlight some of the design and performance characteristics of the two planes. The wings come completely assembled, probably beautifully set flush rivets this spar is built everything is primed you have one skin left to rivet on. Plus the field tanks are built, and they are riveted with pro seal not the cheap plastic that inevitably is lifetime limited. There doesn't seem to be as many people that are interested in a plane powered with the Rotax as there are those interested in a traditional engine Lyc. I have a Murphy Rebel kit that I started but quit working on due to constant military moves and now I have other more important projects that need finishing. I also have a set of the Murphy amphibs floats still in the crate along with another damaged Rebel. I think the price on a new Rebel and floats are probably close to the same price of just the plane kit from RANS.

I am planning on listing all this for sale next spring. I would love to finish it, but physically limited, and have realized I need to buy a flying plane and enjoy the time I can flying. Sorry if my previous post sounded like a rant, I was just trying to justify my decision making process for such a big decision. The ability to install a used O Continental, and the ease of upgrading to every other engine you can imagine with that airframe really does have some appeal.

The kit price from legend is 49, but it comes with everything, high-quality aircraft components…My neighbor is building a S 20 and I look at it every day, I am impressed with the ingenuity and elegance of the design, the way he uses sailboat Pulleys etc. People who have not built a airplane before always underestimate the level of effort it takes to install the electrical system the hydraulic system the engine system the cowling, the cooling baffling, on and on and on.

While I appreciate and like the Carbon Cub, I agree that it is overpriced and mostly just 'bling'. It seems to be the latest fad in aircraft for those with the money to buy one. The Legend is nearly identical without all the marketing and carbon pieces that make it a lot more expensive. Even though the Legend is at the top of my list, the final cost of it is out of my budget. My only hesitation on it is the need to burn LL. Not a deal killer but something that is a consideration since I live 30 miles from the nearest airport.

I plan on heading to the Legend factory some time after Christmas. I just looked all over their Legend site for specs on each plane, but was not able to find any. We toured the plant a few years ago and at the time they listed the baggage capacity at But every airplane we looked at in the factory had 45 max baggage on it's placard.

Battson, SuperCubs are great planes, would be proud to own either one, but engines being equal, seems like the Patrol has considerably better cruise speeds. A wealth of information. Has anyone considered Gurney flaps wickerbills on the LSA? Wayne Massey. Flaps add weight, complexity and build time. Take off roll in the LSA was 90 feet and landing was feet.
